Dear Readers, we have less than six months before we hit 2022! This halfway point is a perfect opportunity for a time management edit as you conclude your midyear reset. Are you ready to leave the global pandemic in the rearview mirror no matter what new rules the CDC may impose on the nation? You’ll need this time management edit to crush the second half of 2021!
Welcome back to the JMS blog!
Dear Readers, thank you very much for your continued support! JMS is a small consulting firm that helps individuals and organizations explore new avenues to face crises of all sorts with efficiency. Consequently, the JMS team is all too familiar with the level of stress and uncertainty you have felt in the past year. We are all wrestling with the draining and dreaded pandemic fatigue! Your concerns around the Delta variant and seemingly contradictory changes from the CDC are valid. And this blog is here to inspire you every step of the way as you fight to move forward and find joy in the littlest moments. OK, enough fluffing around. Let’s get into this right now!
Why do you need this time management edit?
When the COVID-19 pandemic shattered our lives back in March 2020, we all learned to work and learn remotely. Many employees claimed that their productivity increased significantly. With no commute or business travel to account for, why wouldn’t productivity increase? But is a full-time employee considered more productive because s/he can accomplish more at work? Or should the definition of higher productivity include the flexibility to conquer all to-do tasks that keep the household a well-oiled machine on top of work requirements?
Many of you, Dear Readers, lamented that you were no closer to having a meaningful yet balanced life despite being “more” productive at work. In short, you were still very much struggling to resolve the stubbornly nagging work-life conflict. Dear Readers, if you struggle to figure out how to live with intention and purpose, you need this time management edit!
How do you set priorities to feel less exhausted and ease that icky burnout feeling you’ve been wrestling with for months?
OK, you know that you want to live a life of purpose. Now what? How are you supposed to set up priorities? Is writing a master To-Do List the way to go? But then, how do you make sure that you have quality time with loved ones and partake in your favorite hobby?
The purpose of this time management edit, Dear Readers, is to change your approach to productivity and finally find the peace of mind you have been craving. First, please keep in mind that the concept of time is elusive as you will always have more tasks to accomplish yet not enough time to do it all. Thus, the goal of setting priorities is to help you avoid the trap of time management. In other words, this blog does not ascribe to the commonly accepted wisdom that being productive means doing more. You know, you free up an hour of your time due to high efficiency, and suddenly, you’ve added five additional tasks only to find yourself utterly exhausted by the end of the day. Do you know the feeling, Dear Readers?
So yes, beware of the empty promise of doing “more” in the name of “better” time management practices. Instead, determine the stepping stones to the bigger goals you want to achieve in the various aspects of your life and organize your time accordingly. Consequently, Dear Readers, by setting priorities in your preferred categories, you avoid the trap of time management and never run the risk of ever burning out! Do you know a better way to achieve balance in your life? Leave us a comment below if you agree!
Time chunking will set your time management edit to a whole new level!
In the same way, Dear Readers, that you know that your job demands eight hours a day for a minimum of 40 hours a week if you hold a full-time position, you should approach all other aspects of your life with the same level of clarity. For example, you want to have the flexibility to include a one-hour workout every day of the week.
Or, you can commit to having dinner or quality time with the family every evening at the same time. Better yet, you want to follow a daily cleaning schedule to avoid spending Saturday mornings getting the house back in order hours at a time. How do you manage to have your day, let alone your week, include all these priorities? Can you make real progress in your preferred categories without feeling as if you are pulled in 100 directions at once every damnedest day of the week?
Well, Dear Readers, consider cutting your day into chunks of time if you want any shot to have a meaningful life beyond work. Indeed, it becomes a lot easier to balance the many aspects of your lives as you assign bundles of tasks to specific chunks of time and avoid wasting time! By chunking your time, you create a daily routine that allows you to have a purposeful life. How else can you live each moment intentionally? Let us know in the comment below or by email at jms@branding24seven.com.
Consequently, this blog suggests upgrading your time management edit around four chunks of time:
-A morning chunk running from the moment you wake up to the moment you clock in at work.
-A working chunk for the length of your shift.
-A soul-feeding chunk to encompass the after-work hours.
-An evening chunk that closes your day before falling asleep exhausted yet fulfilled!
As you see, Dear Readers, you only have three chunks of time to fit in everything meaningful to you since the fourth one is all about work. And just like that, Dear Readers, you should be able to assign your priorities to each chunk of time and finally organize your life to live it on your terms. Let us know if you need this blog to share a tailor-made schedule for a JMS client who is a full-time employee juggling the same priorities you are, Dear Readers.
