Habits vs. Routines; what gives?
In the first installment of this series, we explored how creating habits help the goal-setting process. Hopefully, Dear Readers, you have made a list of habits you want to incorporate in your life to achieve your goals in 2022. In addition, since habits are essentially tasks that you probably should be doing in a specific order to maximize time management, it is a good idea to think of consolidating habits into routines.
What are routines?
Simply put, Dear Readers, routines are a list of tasks or habits you complete in a pre-determined order over a set period to achieve a rather substantial goal. For example, if you plan to run a Thanksgiving marathon, you’ll need a routine that incorporates runs of different distances over six to nine months. How else could you be ready for such a momentous goal by the end of the year? To be successful, however, you need to be persistent. In other words, it’s the consistency of repeating the same habits over and over that allows you to make substantial progress toward your goals.
Why are routines better to achieve goals?
Let’s be honest, Dear Readers, you hate having the many to-do reminders you scribble all over the place. And having an ever-growing to-do list of tasks is quite overwhelming. Thus, routines help you become more efficient and productive as they group habits in a way that makes sense to your lifestyle.
Here is the best way to create routines that help you achieve goals when in crisis.
Meet Joanne, a fellow reader, and subscriber to the JMS blog. At the end of 2021, she hit rock bottom. Indeed, her world came crashing down with an unforeseen divorce and the death of her only child (not related to the coronavirus). She graciously shares her journey with you as she is fighting to rebuild her life.
As you can imagine, Dear Readers, the crisis that Joanne experienced was so deep that the last thing she wanted to do was discuss goal setting. Therefore, the JMS team asked her to describe what life she would like to live now as she grieves everything she has lost so unexpectedly. After all, life goes on, and Joanne has bills to pay! She cannot afford to lay down on the couch every day and draw her sorrows in interminable Netflix-binging sessions!
Consequently, rather than doing tasks without a rhyme or reason, the JMS team asked Joanne to focus on the life categories she wants to enhance in her post-divorce life. To clarify, she made a list of daily tasks to complete and attract prosperity and abundance in her preferred life categories.
How to make routines work for you.
So, Dear Readers, you too can create routines to achieve goals this year no matter how crazy the world is. Just focus on life categories that you want to improve. Write them down in a place you look at daily as a planner, a goalbook, or your Google calendar. It took Joanne four weeks to decipher what she was doing well and what she wanted to stop.
But, Dear Readers, you’ll have to come back at the end of the month to learn how building routines will improve your time management skills and get you closer to crushing your goals in 2022 like a boss! Most importantly, you can subscribe to this blog by entering your email address at the website’s footer to get the best actional JMS tips to live your best life directly in your inbox!
