The Great Resignation is very much a #BigIdeas2022.
Sorry, Dear Readers, the Great Resignation is alive and well in 2022. Is this good or bad news for you? Well, it depends if you are looking for work or to hire. If you are currently looking for a job, the Great Resignation has created a vacuum that gives you enormous leverage as you look for a better professional fit like no other time in recent history. In short, now is the time to ask what you want. Companies are making unthinkable concessions to attract the best talent!

Dear Readers, you need a strategy if you are looking for new hires. Indeed, the American workers have realized that they are tired of being overworked, underpaid, unappreciated, and fed up with the antics they’ve put up with for years! To survive, you’ll have to do a company deep dive to determine whether your leadership team has perpetuated toxic working conditions the American people are so forcefully rejecting now. Otherwise, you will continue to hire and lose employees left and right. Onboarding employees is a costly endeavor that pays dividends when done right.

How else do you plan to avoid the job tenure trend that, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employees stay with their employers for an average of 4.1 years as of 2020? Is there anything more counterproductive to team building than this costly cyclical rotation of new hires? Let us know if you agree in the comment section.
Is the 4-day workweek finally a mainstream #BigIdeas2022?
In 2020, we all thought that the coronavirus was a temporary setback that would require a short-term solution. Thus, we embrace the decentralization model of living. From online learning to working from home, we’ve had to adapt to a new way of doing business.
In 2021, however, more and more Americans called it to quit. The JMS team hears clients denouncing the utter lack of flexibility even in a remote/hybrid scenario as the chief reason to leave companies. Dear Readers, this blog points to a seismic shift around our assumptions and expectations of that pesky work-life balance. Indeed, American workers seem to be less and less interested in spending interminable hours at work to prove that they are productive.
Enters the 4-day workweek! Yes, Dear Readers, the JMS team believes that more companies will have to restructure employment contracts to fit this #BigIdea2022 if they wish to remain competitive and attract the best talent.
What about commuting?
It is hard to imagine a world without commutes, isn’t it, Dear Readers? What would happen to our highways? Before jumping to the conclusion that commutes will disappear altogether, Dear Readers, this blog questions the validity of such a proposition.
Our workday will indeed continue to look different. Especially since public schools can choose to close at the drop of a hat as unions decided to back remote learning amid the latest COVID-19 surges. We may rely less on our cars as more and more activities are moving online.
However, what about the employees who cannot earn a living remotely? Health professionals come to mind. But what about frontline workers in warehouses, at loading seaports, or even in the retail industry? There is no way to get rid of the commute altogether! But this blog recognizes that this trend could become one of the #BigIdeas2022 for some industries where knowledge-based positions require little more than a laptop and internet connection. Dear Readers, let us know in the comment below if you think the JMS team is mistaken!
Transparency in salary talks is perhaps the shiniest of the work-related #BigIdeas2022.
As vacancies linger beyond belief, the competition to recruit the most talented employees is fiercer than ever. So much so, Dear Readers, companies are beginning to offer employees access to colleagues’ salaries and disclose pay based on current market rates for all vacancies. Unthinkable, isn’t, Dear Readers?!! Until 2019, pay history was the preferred recruitment tool organizations relied upon to determine the salary range for prospective employees.
Today, however, the outlook on outlook is brighter. You, Dear Readers, are likely to be able to negotiate a higher salary, in just about any field, closer to current market rates. Of course, it all depends on location. Highly density populated urban areas are usually more costly than rural parts of the country. Therefore, companies are likely to pay a bit higher to make up for the higher cost of living.
As always, Dear Readers, this blog encourages you to continue to work hard so that nobody ever has the gall to complain to management that you are not worthy of that big promotion you recently received. Let your work speak for itself. But, now at least you have a fighting chance to narrow the wage gap for protected groups we keep hearing about on mainstream media! Any thoughts? Let us know in the comment section below!
