In a post-pandemic era, much has been said about our mental health. Unfortunately, when the mind is assaulted by terrible news all day long, it makes it very difficult to leap out of bed with energy wanting to change the world. For this reason, this blog suggested having a practice of gratitude to help you face the day with more strength than you would otherwise have after the traumatizing year we’ve had, thanks to the coronavirus.

Ok, but what about mornings?
What can you do to increase weekly productivity without overworking? Yes, it is possible! The JMS team likes to frame your morning chunks as propellers that ought to get you closer to achieving your goals and dreams! Consequently, this blog invites you to implement the JMS building block framework that will help you latch onto your purpose from the moment the alarm rings unforgivingly every single morning.
So, what does this mean concretely? Does it mean that you need a morning routine? The short answer is both yes and no! Yes, if you plan to string together a few practices that you want to repeat every morning. No, if you prefer instead to assign certain activities to specific days. It all comes down to what you’ve chosen to be your building blocks, that is, actions that you are taking TODAY that will set you well on the way to accomplishing your 2021 goals.

The long answer is that it depends on what you want to want out of life, Dear Readers! If you are unsure about your goals, how can you ever boost your productivity to the next level? Let’s be real! It is hard to make great strides forward when one doesn’t even know where one is going!

But if you know what goals you want to pursue, Dear Readers, use your morning chunks strategically to get what you want.
If, for example, you want to complete a marathon (42.195 kilometers or 26 miles 385 yards) in 2021 while working more than 40 hours a week, reserving your training solely to weekends is not going to cut it! You will have to make the sacrifice to train during the week. With evening sessions out of the question (please come back tomorrow to find out why), morning chunks are the only feasible option.
Therefore, your building blocks could look like this: two long-distance training sessions, two lifting sessions, one cardio specific training, one recovery workout, one rest day. Now, let’s apply these building blocks to specific morning chunks (loosely based on the schedule of a JMS client who completed a marathon this past fall):
- Monday morning is a recovery YouTube yoga/stretching session (thanks perhaps to a punishing long-distance run every Sunday morning).
- Tuesday morning is your mobility and upper body strength workout in the gym of your apartment building.
- Wednesday morning is a recovery swim workout at the neighborhood YMCA.
- Thursday morning is another mobility and lower strength workout in the gym of your apartment building.
- Friday is the endurance BRICK workout (the killer combo of a long-distance bike run immediately followed by a run as fast as possible that triathletes love to hate).
- Saturday morning is your day of rest!
As you can imagine, Dear Readers, training sessions are the sole focus of morning chunks for this JMS client. Since working from home eliminated a cumbersome commute to NJ, all that is needed is for our marathoner must be dial in at 9 am for a Zoom team meeting. With a 5:30 am wake-up call and work trips eliminated for the foreseeable future, he managed to fit in all training sessions nicely into morning chunks without any problem! All in all, this marathoner was able to go all-in and keep weeklies as fresh as possible while avoiding boredom or burnout.

You too can do it, Dear Readers, even if you have less flexibility than our marathoner. You might need to make small changes such as waking up earlier to succeed. Whatever you set your mind to, be strategic, and you will become that productivity powerhouse!
There you have it, Dear Readers! Has today’s publication convinced you that it is possible to have a rewarding life while holding down a full-time job? How productive would you feel to accomplish your most valuable goals before you clock in for work every week like the marathoner was able to do amid a global pandemic, no less?! Of course, there are so many other facets of your lives that must align with your goals to get such a dynamic morning chunk. Come back tomorrow to find out how other JMS clients plan to manage the remaining two chunks to have an even more meaningful life outside of work.
Final thoughts.
