An effective productivity reset for busy professionals must include some introspection.
Regardless of how productive you’ve been thus far, Dear Readers, there are a few things that you should remove from your calendar if you are honest with yourself! Let’s be real. We all know that America has been battling a loneliness epidemic for the last few years.
Even before the coronavirus pandemic, about half of U.S. adults reported experiencing measurable levels of loneliness. But with the onset of COVID-19-related lockdowns and other restrictions, many of us turned to social media to stay connected with the entire globe. And yet, despite all that connectivity, 90% of U.S. adults believed that America experienced a mental health crisis last year per a survey from CNN in partnership with the Kaiser Family Foundation.
Dear Readers, it is time to prioritize your mental health and happiness! Do not let whatever expectations other people have dictate the kind of life you should be living, and instead, go after your dreams with reckless abandon. So, grab a piece of paper to spell out everything you want to achieve and acknowledge the shortcomings you’ve undeniably rubbed against so far this year. Dear Readers, that’s the starting point of your productivity reset. Ready? Let’s go!
The key to your success lies in your weekly routine.
Dear Readers, most busy professionals believe that if they nail a solid daily routine, their productivity will go through the roof naturally. Unfortunately, that’s quite a myopic approach to time management. Indeed, you’ll end up chasing your tail as you force yourself to attack a gigantic to-do list and still make no progress toward your goals. While working with clients, the JMS team has witnessed how choice fatigue can wreak havoc on even the most disciplined and motivated busy professionals. In a month, Dear Readers, you’ll drop the daily routine as you question why push so hard when you are not gaining any traction and fight another onset of burnout for the third time in 2023 alone! Who wants to live like this?
Why not consider creating a weekly routine to avoid choice fatigue and develop a bird eye view of where you are going? To have a successful productivity reset this back-to-school season, Dear Readers, you need mental clarity. Indeed, having a dream is great because it gives you direction. Otherwise, one has the frustrating experience of going through the motion of living without any purpose. However, beyond having dreams Dear Readers, you want to establish a weekly routine that spells out every step needed over the next few months to achieve your 2023 goals. Now that is how you end the year fulfilled and excited to start 2024. Do not you think, Dear Readers? Leave us a comment below if you agree.

Here is your Hit List to prioritize and make this productivity reset easy for any professional, no matter how busy or overwhelmed you may feel.
Dear Readers, prioritizing is the only way to be productive. You cannot do all the things for everybody! How could you feel fulfilled if you let others’ expectations dictate the kind of life you should be living?
There is no other option. When you prioritize, your energy flows where your attention goes. For example, you cannot wish to lose 100 pounds, save $10,000, pay down all credit card debt, spend more time with friends, and learn Spanish all at once! To help you prioritize, we put together a Hit List of questions to make your productivity reset seamless.
What can I remove?
To combat the urge to want to do everything under the sun, Dear Readers, this blog encourages you to identify chores, tasks, and commitments that do not serve you and drain you from whatever energy you muster to face the day.
If you have children, you will have so many commitments to honor that you will see more clearly what tasks you should remove. But, if you are single without dependents, you might not be inclined to eliminate them from your calendar. Therefore, you want to start by choosing the two or three bigger goals you want to achieve by the end of the year. Once you know what you are chasing, you’ll know the unnecessary things cramming your schedule and zapping your energy to remove. Dear Readers, be ruthless as you trim the fat to have the most freedom to pursue what truly matters to you.
If not, can I at least delegate more?
Dear Readers, this blog gets it. You feel that you are the only person who can do everything. Unfortunately, this thinking will lead you to yet another burnout. Sometimes though, it is simply impossible to remove tasks and commitments. To break the vicious cycle of burning out every few weeks, Dear Readers, consider delegating the duties that do not support your goals. You can delegate household tasks to other family members or redistribute other commitments at work or while volunteering to limit spreading yourself too thin between the many things that keep professionals busy! Don’t wait to delegate, Dear Readers. Do it right away, and don’t feel bad!
As a busy professional, how can my productivity reset to protect my mental health?
Dear Readers, we are still far away from the hustle and bustle of year-end festivities. You must pace yourself and avoid flaming out too early in the semester by mid-October. Therefore, this blog invites you to care about your mental health as you care about your most prized possessions. While there are many activities you can do that could fall under self-care, the objective is to find balance and appreciate your journey so far in the year. Find a way to enjoy the tiniest victories and cultivate gratitude.
Journaling, for instance, is a powerful tool for introspection. As you reread past reflections, you will see your progress and be motivated to keep going! If that’s not your cup of tea, consider establishing a ritual that allows you to clear your mind and put life on pause. For some, that would be creating a spa night. Others might prefer to meal prep for the first three days of the week, so they don’t have to rely on the drive-through for overpriced fast-food meals. For others still, it’s about disconnecting from social media and decluttering/cleaning their houses from top to bottom.
Whatever that looks like to you, Dear Readers, please include a mental health element to your productivity reset. If you are consistent, you’ll see just how even-keeled you are becoming and ready to take on anything that this crazy thing called life will throw at you!
