Why should you be more aware of your feelings?
Dear Readers, have you ever worked with supervisors who are emotionally stunted? You know, the ones who are awkward when interacting with E-V-E-R-Y-O-N-E. And since they have zero self-awareness, lack any empathy, and act as though others are on Earth to serve them, they are unbearable to work with under any circumstances. Invariably, direct reports complain that such supervisors are too toxic to work with and detrimental to their mental health! Indeed, such supervisors tend to be defensive, argumentative, and throw tantrums when things don’t go their way.
Having such a short fuse will, of course, negatively affect the way they lead. To be easily offended means that they blame everyone around them for everything that goes wrong while micromanaging everyone’s work. No, wander direct reports can’t stand such supervisors! Especially as they are never prepared to take accountability for their mistakes but will take credit for other people’s work.
Does any of this sound familiar, Dear Readers? Do you know people like that? Do you like to be around them? Probably not! They make the case that we should all be aware of our feelings since we constantly interact with people in many social settings. Do you agree, Dear Readers? Or do you want to keep the emotional intelligence of a child? Let us know in the comments below!
Why cultivating gratitude will improve your emotional intelligence in 2022.
Dear Readers, the end game is to be a well-functioning and emotionally mature adult. This blog recognizes that you all come from different walks of life with vastly different upbringings. But, if you think about it, you will often find yourself in a situation where you will mingle and even work with people from diverse backgrounds. So, since you cannot change other people, why not focus on improving your emotional intelligence in 2022? That way, as you develop your even-keeled temperament, you can keep emotionally stunted people far away from you! Is that blissful thinking? Let us know in the comments below!
OK, Dear Readers, this blog gets it. You plan to be very busy chasing the dreams you’ve put on hold in the last two years and don’t have hours to spend improving your emotional intelligence. However, you can learn to flex the gratitude muscle faster than you think. Therefore, this blog suggests creating a routine around the practice of cultivating gratitude. In time, you will see that the more you keep track of your blessings, you will feel more successful.
Perhaps you can spend the first 10 minutes of your day as you wake up to think about three people you are grateful for during this global pandemic. Or you can take a minute or two before inhaling your lunch to express how fortunate you are that your shift at work is going well or that you have a job that provides for your loved ones. You can even carve a moment in the evening as you prepare for the next day to sit down and make a list of five blessings you must acknowledge before going to bed. Better yet, write your list in your goalbook to feel motivated and encouraged by the tangible progress towards your goals.
As you see, Dear Readers, improving your emotional intelligence does not require an exhaustive level of ongoing effort. All you need is a lifetime commitment to a five-minute daily practice to cultivate gratitude. In time, your outlook on life will change, even in times of crisis, and you’ll be able to attract success as you forge meaningful relationships.
