Large cities, from Los Angeles to Philadelphia, have adopted curfews in response to widespread looting sessions that spread across the U.S. like wildfire blemishing the awareness peaceful demonstrations are desperately trying to bring to the tragic issue of police brutality in Black and Brown communities.
The JMS team is back with its weekly shot of motivation to give you the strength to push through this challenging period. If it’s your first time here, Dear Readers welcome, and thanks for stopping by the JMS blog. FYI, JMS is a consulting firm located in Philadelphia that advises organizations and businesses on how to manage crises with efficiency and expediency. To that end, the JMS team is in the business of designing recovery plans as robust as possible that avoid behavioral and financial paralysis.
Here in Philadelphia, looting began over the weekend. Hooligans set a police car on fire on Saturday. And even though Philadelphia mayor Jim Kenney did set a 9 pm curfew, the level of overnight destruction was so astonishing that the community came together spontaneously to help with the cleaning of thousand pieces of shattered glass littering our sidewalks and the boarding up of the battered storefronts. The PA Army National Guard arrived Sunday night, and the city of Philadelphia will observe a curfew every night this week.
Given the level of looting, assault, and even murder, this week’s shot of motivation almost did not happen! Dear Readers, the JMS team is just as overwhelmed as you are by such a high level of destruction! On one hand, peaceful demonstrations must continue to encourage a dialogue to discuss the mistreatment of the police in black and brown communities. On the other hand, the death of George Floyd mustn’t become the excuse to usher in an era of lawlessness transforming urban areas into war zones. So, Dear Readers, let us reevaluate what Thomas Jefferson told us:
“Nothing can stop the man with the right mental attitude from achieving his goal; nothing on earth can help the man with the wrong mental attitude.”
There is no need for translation for this motivational quote. The looting of urban areas, where public safety resources have been stretched thin due to an unprecedented effort to combat the spread of the coronavirus, will have a catastrophic economic impact on the local economy. This is likely to impact the delivery of necessary public services precisely when more than 40 million Americans have filed for unemployment benefits over the last two months and are in dire need of assistance.
Do you see how the wrong mentality of these hooligans is endangering the well-being of countless American families and communities that may still be living under stay-at-home orders? Now more than ever, Dear Readers, we need people with the right mental attitude to ignite the momentum needed to fight injustice, oppression, or inequality wherever it exists. Recent events have highlighted the shocking scale still prevalent in our society today.
Shall we come together to take back our lives, communities, and livelihoods? Dear Readers, your voice can make a difference. What actions will you take to help lead to the transformational change in tactical techniques needed to restore the trust of your municipal police department? Let us know what changes you would like to see moving forward. What would you like to see from this blog? Please comment section or by email at jms@branding24seven.com or by mail at:
