Welcome Dear Readers! The JMS team is back with valuable insights that will inspire you to be fearless in the pursuit of your dreams. If it’s your first time here, Dear Readers welcome, and thanks for stopping by the JMS blog. FYI, JMS is a consulting firm located in Philadelphia that advises people and organizations on how to manage crises with efficiency and expediency. To that end, the JMS team is in the business of designing recovery plans as robust as possible that avoid behavioral and financial paralysis. Therefore, Dear Readers, this blog will help you make sense of these unprecedented times without feeling devoid of motivation and utterly defeated. You got this, Dear Readers, and don’t you ever forget it!
The anatomy of success
Dear Readers, we can all agree that success happens with a bit of luck, a whole lot of elbow grease, and sheer grit. However, did you know that success also depends on the ability to determine the best decisions to achieve your life goals consistently? Wait a minute, could this be any simpler? Ok, Dear Readers, let’s think this through! Have you ever noticed that success seldom comes out of a perfect opportunity? After all, life tends to throw us surprises or outright setbacks when we least expected it. If we are honest with ourselves, Dear Readers, we know deep down that success does not rely on perfectly executed plans!
So, Dear Readers, waiting to have the perfect conditions to be successful is futile since such a scenario will never materialize. For this reason, this blog insists that the crucial ingredient needed to be successful is the ability to take action decisively, consistently, and repeatedly. Of course, Dear Readers, there isn’t a way to guarantee that your actions will always yield the outcome that you most desire! What you can control, however, is the way you react to epic crises this blog calls Big Bad Wolf or BBW. So, rather than accepting that the norm is to experience physical paralysis or heart palpitations, consider creating an efficient crisis management framework that will bring you peace of mind no matter what!
Desperation is a bad advisor.
Tell the truth Dear Readers, don’t you know this to be true? But when under duress, Dear Readers, desperation can be deadly. That’s because, in a moment of crisis, actions are what is needed to untangle a mess or outright save our lives. Consequently, it is best to avoid standing idle in hesitation, ferociously running a million and one possible scenarios in your head as every time you must face a BBW as such reactions are not conducive to peace of mind!
The first key to the JMS resilience framework: have a clear vision of what you want to achieve in the long run.
Why does this matter when your hair is on fire, and the BBW is giving you a heart attack right this minute? That’s because clarity informs actions. Easy enough in theory! But what does that look like in practice? Say, for instance, you have lost your job in this global pandemic. Congress has not extended unemployment benefits. As you can imagine, Dear Readers, you desperately need an income since bills are accumulating mercilessly. What would be your next move if you have no clear vision in mind, and you are acting out of desperation? Do you see, Dear Readers, how easy it is to make a terrible mistake simply because you thought it solved a crisis in the short run?!
To avoid making future costly mistakes, consider instead clarifying what you want for you and your family in the long run so that the actions you take today will not endanger the welfare of the family. Do you see how clarity informs your actions? As long as you remain true to your long-term vision, Dear Readers, you will never make a mistake (even though it might feel, at times, that the journey is taking a lot longer than anticipated)!
The second key to the JMS resilience framework: develop new reflexes.
OK, but how is this helpful? As established earlier, Dear Readers, you’ve lost your job, and can longer sleep at night as anxiety has invaded every corner of your mind! This is the million-dollar question, isn’t it Dear Readers? Is it possible to avoid making poor decisions in this case? Is there a magic formula that can help you make the right decisions in matters of life or death? Not really! But, Dear Readers, if you learn to train your brain to approach every decision with the same critical framework, you will be able to develop the reflexes than can overcome any BBW while remaining productive and focused. The third key to the JMS resilience framework: align your actions with your definition of productivity.
Alright, Dear Readers, you have a clear long-term vision and have developed new reflexes to help you cope with the BBW that threatened to end everything. But you are not yet operating at an optimum productivity level. What gives?!! Well, Dear Readers, it all comes back to how you define productivity for your family.
As discussed in the third installment of this series, productivity is the key to having a purposeful life. Being productive is not only about being a busy bee, working yourself to a frenzy, and making money! In reality, Dear Readers, if you want your life to be meaningful, you have to align your actions as if they are steps on a continuum despite the many likely obstacles you will have to face.
So, let’s get back to the job loss example for a moment. If you define productivity to mean having a great family life, does taking a job that requires you to leave your children to fend for themselves in the virtual learning jungle amid a global pandemic being productive? Or, should you search for a WFH job that gives you the flexibility to cater to the increasing needs of your children who are too young to comprehend that we are truly living in unprecedented times? Do you jump on any job just for the paycheck, or do you also look for opportunities that will engage your talents and bring you closer to your partner who might be even more overwhelmed than you are? The choice is yours, Dear Readers!
There you have it, Dear Readers! If you are ready to get your mojo back, join us next week for another installment of the JMS Summer Productivity Series to help you find your way out of coronavirus-related setbacks. Say goodbye to anxiety and hello to everything you have ever wanted out of life. Let’s be successful together, shall we?
